Your Relentless Team of Trainers
Vanessa
My husband Matt was first introduced to CrossFit on his deployment in 2011. He kept raving about it and once he got back, I decided to give it a try after he begged me to try it. I started in June of 2011 and haven’t looked back. My husband and I moved here in 2012 and was apart of CFFM after they were kicked out of the basement-it was in my garage for a bit actually. Then we teamed up with Bob to make CFFM-CFGB. I’ve been part of CFGB since Bob opened the doors. I love the competition and camaraderie of a CrossFit gym, it brings out the athlete in so many people. I strive everyday to make each person better than when they walked into the gym. I’m so thankful for the people I’ve met and the lives that have been changed thanks to CrossFit.

I discovered CrossFit back in 2011 when my husband turned on the 2011 CrossFit Games, however I did not start my journey until November 2012. I walked in overweight and out of shape and ready to take on whatever was thrown at me. I have become stronger, happier and healthier due to CrossFit and healthy eating. In 2014 I received my Level 1 and started coaching to help other reach their fitness goals. CFGB is a great box and I have enjoyed helping and watching the athletes at this gym improve. I get so excited when someone PRs or gets a skill they have been working on. So if you hear someone screaming it is probably me.

I first decided to try crossfit as a personal challenge on my 40th birthday. I happened to catch the crossfit games on tv a few weeks earlier and it intrigued me enough to research the Internet to find out more about this “crossfit stuff” and give it a try.
So after nearly puking from exhaustion and splitting my shin open from a botched box jump, I have to admit that I was weirdly enough still drawn in to want to come back for more. I think it was the fact that I was totally taken off guard by the camaraderie and the support from the other athletes. I had never been in a non-team work out setting that had such a huge team-like community feel. It was also the camaraderie that pushed me to test for my level 1 trainer so I can welcome, embrace, challenge, and hopefully give back to other athletes that same feeling I experienced when I first started.

I was introduced to CrossFit in early-2013. At the time, I was unhealthy and unhappy with the direction my life was taking. But, I avoided going because I didn’t want to be “that overweight lady” in the gym. Then, I read an article about a Mom that had tried CrossFit and I thought, “If she can do it..maybe I can!”. I showed up for my first class July 20, 2013 and never looked back. I fell in love with the constant challenges that CrossFit provides, and the sense of accomplishment I get from learning a new skill. CrossFit pushes me past that point of what I accept that I can do, and shows me what I can really do! I received my Level 1 Certification in 2015, because I wanted to help others become their best selves. It truly brings me joy to see someone get their first pull-up, or conquer a workout that seemed impossible.

My CrossFit journey started about 5 years ago in Los Angeles, CA. As an active duty Air Force Officer and former high school/collegiate athlete (track/basketball) I was looking for something different. After having a pretty dope conversation with a good friend of mine about the value of health, I decided to drop in at my local box (shout out to LAX CrossFit!!!) I was hooked. I participated in my first open in 2013 and I haven’t looked back since. Last year I got the itch to coach. Having coached in the past (high school track) I really wanted to get back at it. I love the process of getting better. My family and I moved to Maryland this past fall. In January I found CFGB and started my coaching internship. This is my first year coaching and so far I am loving every minute of it. I truly look forward to growing as a coach and athlete with the CFGB family.

I’ve been doing CrossFit since Sept 2010 and have made it part of my health and wellness for life with my athletic family here at Glen Burnie. My husband Jim encouraged me to share my passion to become a trainer. My joy comes from the folks reaching a goal, from a first pull-up, a faster run time, muscle-up and losing a weight. Once you’ve met your fitness goal and I’m around? Be sure to ring the PR bell and write your name on a star with the date when you’ve hit it!
Grateful to be part of a community that welcomes the whole family!

I found myself sitting across a plate of ribs at Mission BBQ discussing CrossFit with Max and Brian. I had just finished drinking the CrossFit Kool-Aide and was taking steps to open a new box. Brian, Max and the many wonderful, diverse and talented trainers at CrossFit Fort Meade – were looking for a CrossFit home. It was a match made in sweat-angel heaven.
I have been teaching group exercise classes since 2003. I enjoy cycling and weight-training as personal hobbies. In 2012 – looking to break-through a multi-year plateau in my own training regime – I took my first high-intensity interval training session. Struck by the CrossFit lightning-bolt, I reached new levels of fitness with each workout. I was amazed how different each class could be. I was even more surprised to find out how efficient CrossFit was at finding my weaknesses.
Helping others and building a strong community is important to me. Since 2008, I have been fortunate to have participated in the Spin-a-thon and Tour de Cure – annual charity events for the American Diabetes Association. I have also enjoyed teaching at the Workout for a Cure – a weekly CrossFit workout during the Fall and Winter of 2012 at local parks that I organized to benefit the American Diabetes Association.
In 2012, I successfully completed my Level I certification and opened CrossFit Glen Burnie. In 2013, I joined forces with CrossFit Fort Meade. We now operate CrossFit Glen Burnie near Fort Meade in Odenton, Maryland.
