Hello CFGB Community –
For the NEXT five weeks the worldwide CrossFit community is getting together for something special – I would like to invite you to participate. Here are the details along with some specifics for the CFGB community.
Next week begins the 2018 CrossFit Games season. Over 350,000 people worldwide from upwards of 170 countries will be participating in the CrossFit Open. The Open consists of FIVE workouts – one workout each week for five weeks.
The Open is the first stage of the CrossFit Games season and the largest community event of the year. Every year, hundreds of thousands of athletes come together to compete in the worldwide, online competition.
Anyone aged 14 or older can compete. All you have to do is sign up at Games.CrossFit.com and log your score each week. Workouts are released on Thursdays at 8 p.m. EDT, and athletes have four days to complete the workout for the week and submit their score. Scores are due before 8 p.m. EDT the following Monday.
The Open offers two versions of each workout, scaled and Rx’d. The scaled option makes the event all-inclusive. All can compare their results to others worldwide, regionally, by age or within their own gyms. An official CrossFit Games app will be available in late January, which will focus on your own personal performance in the Open.
At the end of five weeks, the fittest move on to the next stages of competition: the Regionals and the Online Qualifier.
The five CrossFit Open workouts [code named 18.1, 18.2, 18.3, 18.4, and 18.5] are UNKNOWN to all (except for a very-select number of individuals at CrossFit HQ). Each week on THURSDAY at 8 PM, the details of that week’s CrossFit Open Workout will be announced. Each FRIDAY, the WORKOUT OF THE DAY will be that week’s Open workout.
HOW WILL THIS EFFECT CLASSES DURING THE WEEK?
First, the THURSDAY 8 PM CrossFit class will be temporarily suspended and replaced by the WEEKLY CrossFit Open Announcement – streamed live at the gym. Join us on THURSDAY evenings at 8 PM at the gym for popcorn as we watch Dave Castro announce the workout, followed by watching several of the CrossFit Games athletes perform the workout live.
Also, the CrossFit Open Workout will be the WOD programmed for ALL CLASSES on FRIDAY. So, regardless of whether you choose to participate in the OPEN or not, each class on Friday will feature that week’s Open workout as the WOD. So, all classes will be meeting Friday (5 am, 6 am, 9:45 am, 1:45 PM, 3 PM, 4:15 PM) with the 5:30 PM and 6:45 PM following a slightly different format – known as FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS.
FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS begins each Friday at 5:30 PM — with heats running about every 20 to 30 minutes — enabling everyone to participate, workout, and cheer for one another. We will post the heat-schedule sign-ups weekly so that you can select your workout time-frame.
INTERMURAL FORMAT – We will be forming (4) INTERMURAL teams this year – with points awarded for participation, CFGB podium finishes, and team spirit. This will be a wonderful opportunity for friendly gym-wide competition, as well as a fun opportunity to meet and workout with other CFGB members.
I will be sending another email out early next week with some follow-up email as well as answers to any questions that you might have. Please feel free to send any questions/suggesions my way – as we are excited to make this an enjoyable experience for EVERYONE! 🙂
Best,
Bob
